The Gulf Islands Marine Rescue Society (GIMRS) is a Canada Revenue Agency Registered Charity (883015596). We provide tax receipts for all donations over $20.

If you are interested in joining the unit as a volunteer team member:


  • you are:

    • not colourblind

    • located within 15 minutes travel time to Vesuvius when “on call”

  • you have:

    • a Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC)

    • a current valid Criminal Record Check

    • a reasonable level of physical fitness


  • Meetings/Classroom training - every Thursday 1730-1900h at the SAR Hall, 261 Fulford-Ganges Road

  • On-the-Water training - two hours on the SAR vessel, every week or two, usually with several options for training times

  • To be available on-call for search and rescue taskings - 7 days in every month is ideal.

    • Each 24h day is broken down into 6h periods. Sign-up is online. Your on call time can be scheduled to suit your availability. If your schedule changes then it is usually easy to get another member to cover your time.
